Samsung seeking U.S site for 300-mm fab

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Arizona, Oregon and Texas are among the states in the running for Samsung Electronics ’s new and proposed semiconductor wafer fab, according to reports.

Samsung’s proposed 300-mm fab in the United States will cost $3.5 billion. The new plant would employ about 700 people, according to The Business Journal of Phoenix.

Officials from South Korea’s Samsung in the report said the company is seeking a location for a new fab that is similar in size to Intel Corp.’s recently announced $3 billion fab in Chandler, Ariz.

Samsung has been offered an attractive package to expand in north Austin, Texas, where it owns 300 acres. The only Samsung fab in the U.S. is located in Austin, where it employs about 950 people.
