Samsung demos Korean version of WiMAX at 4G Forum

Tuesday, August 30, 2005 Samsung is demonstrating the interoperability and hand-off capability of the South Korean version of WiMAX, dubbed WiBro, at this week’s Samsung 4G Forum taking place on Jeju Island, Korea.

The company, and Korea, is pushing hard its version of the mobile broadband technology and wants to establish it at a faster pace than the WiMAX Forum.

Products conforming to the fixed version of the WiMAX 802.16 specification have recently started interoperability testing at the Forum’s chosen test lab in Malaga, Spain.

WiBro is a derivative of the mobile version of WiMAX, dubbed 802.16e, the standard for which is expected to be verified later this year.

Samsung claims it is the first company to demonstrate hand-over technology for the WiMAX 802.16e specification. At the 4G Forum, the live demonstration will show data being transmitted at up to 60 km/h.

“We are heavily involved in the research of WiBro equipment and handsets as well as the other core technologies related to 4G mobile communications,” said Ki Tae Lee, president of Samsung’s Telecommunications Network business. “For a successful deployment of the 4G technology, it is imperative that we define the vision for the 4G services and applications.”
