Japan's Elpida Memory Inc and Taiwan's Powerchip Semiconductor Corp, are strengthening their co-operation in a bid to catch Samsung Electronics, the global semiconductor leader, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.
In its online edition Sunday the newspaper cited sources close to the matter who said Elpida plans to provide Powerchip with next-generation ultra-fine memory chip processing technology.
The technology will allow Powerchip to produce smaller DRAM chips, with linewidths of 75 and 80 nanometers, so more chips can be produced from a single silicon wafer.
Powerchip recently purchased a 0.29 pct stake in Elpida for about one bln yen, while Elpida purchased a 0.6 pct stake in Powerchip in April.
