Seeking to expand its 200-mm manufacturing capacity, semiconductor supplier Intel Corp. said it would invest $345 million to expand existing 200-mm fabs in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Hudson, Mass.
The Colorado and Massachusetts fabs, dubbed Fabs 23 and 17 respectively, primarily produce communications chipsets and flash memory components for various Intel platforms.
Intel (Santa Clara, Calif.) continues to invest in onshore manufacturing. The company announced in July it would construct a 300-mm fab in Chandler, Ariz., dubbed Fab 32, to produce leading-edge microprocessors based on 45-nm process technology.
"These investments will increase the capacity of our 200-mm manufacturing network to support our platform initiatives and will give us additional supply flexibility across a range of products," said Bob Baker, senior vice president, general manager, Technology and Manufacturing Group, in a statement.
In Colorado Springs, Intel will invest the $190 million to upgrade a second clean room within Fab 23 that will allow completion of final processing steps for microprocessors-- produced on 300-mm wafers at other Intel plants-- prior to final testing and packaging. The upgraded fab is slated for completion the second half of 2007, with several hundred new jobs being added.
In Hudson, Intel's $155 million investment will be used to increase overall capacity at Fab 17 by adding new manufacturing equipment and reconfiguring portions of the factory. The added capacity will be used to build various logic products, including chipsets to support Intel's platform initiatives for mobile, desktop and server systems. More than 300 new jobs will be created.
