Sony Corp is expected to consolidate its position as No. 1 foreign buyer from Taiwan this year with total annual procurement value of US$6.5 billion, up 25% from last year's US$5.2 billion.
Many Taiwan suppliers to Sony are expected to benefit from the Japanese company's expanding procurements from the island, industry sources said. The sources attributes Sony's rising procurement value to the increasing orders for thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panels, organic light-emit diode (OLED) panels for MP3 players, and other electronics components.
Taiwan's Premier Frank Hsieh recently granted a merit medal to Nobuyuki Idei, Sony's ex-CEO and incumbent consultant for his contributions to the trade enhancement and technical exchanges during his CEO term.
Nobuyuki began setting up close cooperation ties with Taiwan when he took charge of Sony's VAIO PC business division. Most of Sony's VAIO PCs, as well as game consoles and digital versatile disc (DVD) players, are supplied by Taiwanese contract producers.
According to Nobuyuki, Taiwan is an important contract-production citadel for the global information technology (IT) line. The establishment of long-term and stable strategic-alliance ties with world-class partners in Taiwan is vital for both Sony and Taiwanese suppliers.
