The report said that a supervisory board meeting scheduled for Nov. 17 was being set up to approve a proposal to sell the division. It added that, according to Handelsblatt Wolfgang Ziebart, Infineon’s chairman and chief executive has been planning the move since he took over at the company more than a year ago.

The idea that Infineon would sell its memory business, possibly to a company such as Micron Technology Inc. (Boise, Idaho) in the U.S., was put aside by Robert LeFort, president of Infineon North America, at the end of August 2005 when he defended Infineon's continued presence in the market, saying: "Memories remain the test bed for all our processes. It creates synergies for everything we do." LeFort’s comments put a check on speculation that had previously been rife that Infineon was looking to sell off its capital-intensive memory unit.

However, Ziebart reportedly sees more opportunities for Infineon selling application-specific chips to the automotive and telecommunications industries than he does in the memory unit, which is subject to large swings in sales revenue and earnings depending on the market. Infineon has declined to comment on the Handelsblatt report, the report said
