Intel to sink US$300 million into Napa promotion

Thursday, September 22, 2005

Intel may spend US$300 million to market its next-generation mobile platform, the dual-core Napa that is slated for release in the first quarter 2006, according to sources in the Taiwan notebook industry. Notebooks based on the dual-core Napa platform are expected to hit store shelves worldwide by the third quarter of next year, indicated the sources.

Jerry Kao, Asia Pacific regional marketing manager of Intel, said that he has not received any notification from headquarters about the marketing budget for the upcoming Napa platform.

International notebook vendors are gearing up to introduce Napa-based notebook lines for the first half 2006, with some ambitious vendors planning for more than 10 models based on the dual-core mobile technology to be available for next year, according to sources at Taiwan notebook makers.

Intel is phasing out its Sonoma line, which consists of its Dothan CPU and 915GM/PM chipsets, for consumer notebooks in the first quarter 2006, indicated the sources. The chip giant is also expecting the adoption of dual-core notebooks to penetrate the enterprise segment, which has a longer product lifecycle, by the second half of next year, the sources added.
