Hynix Semiconductor will deliver its first 8Gbit NAND flash in October at earliest, according to industry sources.
The production status for 8Gbit flash is still marked as ¡§under development¡¨ at Hynix's website. Sources are now saying that Hynix will start sampling the 8Gbit flash by the end of this month and customers may see related supply available as soon as next month.
The company¡¦s 8Gbit flash solution will not be a single 8Gbit chip but instead will feature four 2Gbit chips stacked into the same package, the sources noted. Sources said Hynix will target traders on the spot market with the product, as opposed to rivals Samsung Electronics and Toshiba, which mostly allow their high-density flash capacities to be reserved by contract customers.
Industry observers indicated that Samsung is currently delivering 8Gbit flash using two architectures (one 8Gbit chip or two stacked 4Gbit chips). Toshiba only uses two stacked 4Gbit flash chips for its 8Gbit solution.
