Atmel to unload its France fab

Thursday, October 6, 2005

San Jose-based microcontroller supplier Atmel Corp. reported today it would sell its Nantes, France manufacturing facility and the related foundry activities to Paris-based XbyBus Group.

XbyBus gathers companies that specialize in ultra high reliability components for default tolerant and high-dependability products such as telecommunications, in-board vehicle electronics and processors used in active mechanical prostheses such as artificial hearts.

The facility employs approximately 300 employees.

“We are pleased to be able to reach an agreement that will preserve many jobs in France,” said George Perlegos, chairman and CEO of Atmel, in a statement.

Perlegos also noted this sale is an important step in Atmel’s plan to consolidate its manufacturing and reduce costs.

XbyBus said it plans to develop its activities in high reliability electronic components at the site, particularly in the field of wafer production with proprietary high vacuum processes with a $35.9 million (30 million euro) investment over the next two years.

The sale of Atmel’s Nantes facility is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

Atmel said it would maintain a significant presence in Nantes with the design of microcontroller products for the automotive and industrial markets along with its space related activities.
