A Samsung Electronics site selection committee has recommended Austin as the location for a 300-mm memory fab, said Samsung Austin spokesman Bill Cryer.
The recommendation will not become final until the Samsung board of directors approves the decision, with a board meeting expected in a few weeks, he added.
With an estimated investment of $3.5 billion, another 700 jobs could be added on top of the current 1,000 people here at a 200-mm DRAM fab that was built in 1997 and expanded in 2004.
"Assuming a go-ahead from the board, ground breaking could be early next year, and the fab could be ready within 18 months after ground breaking," Cryer said.
