As expected, Intel has released its first dual-core Xeon server processor, code-named Paxville.
Both Intel and AMD have been pursuing the development of multiple core processors as the next method to improve chip performance and have been in a race to deliver the first dual core processors. AMD delivered its Opteron server processor ahead of this Intel launch, but Intel was first with a dual core processor for the desktop.
Dual core is viewed as the way processor makers can crank up performance without cranking up the clock speed, which has recently caused power and leakage concerns as chips have scaled down to smaller and smaller nodes.
