Global DRAM output continued to grow in September, with all segments up more than 5% from August and the total reaching 627.79 million 256Mbit equivalent units, according to DRAMeXchange.
DDR2 output was up 24% sequentially in September, increasing to 238.8 million (256Mbit-equivalent million units). DDR2 output from Samsung Electronics, Infineon Technologies, Elpida Memory and Nanya Technology exceeded their DDR output in September, and as a result, these companies experienced higher inventory pressure on lower than expected DDR2 demand, according to industry watchers.
Tight DDR2-supported chipset supply is now prompting DRAM makers with higher DDR2 exposure to slow down their output for the fourth quarter. As a result, DRAMeXchange believes DDR2 output growth may slow down before DDR2 demand materializes.
