SanDisk and Sony co-developed fingertip size compact memory

Tuesday, October 18, 2005 SanDisk and Sony have jointly developed "Memory Stick Micro," a fingertip size compact memory card format designed primarily for mobile phones. The dimensions are 15 x 12.5 x 1.2 mm, about 1/4 the size of "Memory Stick PRO Duo" media. The media's commercial debut is slated for the first half of 2006. Licensing for the development of compatible hardware will start on October 3, 2005.

SanDisk and Sony improved the shape of Memory Stick Micro media to allow reduction in the connector height and width in host devices. The companies also devised a function to prevent the memory card from jumping out when ejecting. With a dedicated adaptor, Memory Stick PRO compatible devices can be used to write onto and read Memory Stick Micro media. Key specifications of the Memory Stick Micro format are as follows: peak data transmission rate is 20 MB per second. Maximum capacity is 32 GB. The connector is 11-pin type. Low voltage operation at +1.8 V is available, as well as 2.7-3.6 V, at which Memory Stick PRO compatible products operate. Both serial and 4-bit parallel interfaces are equipped. Operating temperature extends from -25 degrees to +85 degrees. "MagicGate" technology is used for copyright protection.
