Hynix Semiconductor expects there will be no price gap between registered DIMMs and fully-buffered DIMMs starting from the first quarter of 2007, the company said at IDF Taiwan. According to Hynix, this will be a turning point for FB-DIMM technology and it will begin dominating over registered DIMMs in the market.
Hynix is preparing its first FB-DIMM products and will commence shipping in the first quarter of 2006, the company stated. Utilizing DDR2-533 and DDR2-667 DRAM chips, the products will be available in capacities of 512MB, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB, according to Hynix. DDR2-800 FB-DIMMs and FB-DIMM2 products are expected to come out in 2007.
The company forecasts that FB-DIMMs will account for less than 5% of the server DIMM market in the first quarter of 2006, but the market share will gradually increase. By the fourth quarter of 2007, the shipment ratio between FB-DIMMs and registered DIMMs will be about 4:1, Hynix expects.
