DRAM giant Micron Technology is investing $250 million to build a test and assembly plant Xi'an, China, the company confirmed today.
Last month Micron signed an agreement with the government of Xi’an and is preparing to begin construction of the plant, although no timeline has been released.
The company does have an R&D facility in Shanghai, but this would be the company’s first testing facility in China.
Micron said it expects to begin test and assembly services in early 2007.
“We have a long term strategy of increasing our presence in China to better serve our customers there,” according to a company spokesman.
“We also intend to establish a fully integrated approach to support regional and national customers in China,” he continued.
While Micron has not publicly discussed its strategy, it has been quietly building relationships with consumer electronics and IT companies, as part of its existing work with Chinese customers, and also seeks to build and support the semiconductor industry there, the spokesman concluded.
