UMC , the world's second-largest contract microchip maker, said October sales were down just 10.2 percent from a year ago as strong demand helps its revenues reclaim heights reached in 2004.
United Microelectronics Corp said October sales were T$9.04 billion ($268 million), down from T$10.06 billion in the same month last year but a 6.35 percent rise from T$8.50 billion in September.
UMC is pumping out chips as customers race to put new electronic products, such as third generation (3G) mobile phones, on store shelves in time for the Christmas shopping season.
But despite a steady recovery from a chip glut in the first half of this year, investors fear macroeconomic factors like high oil prices will blunt consumer demand and lead to another pile-up of excess inventory by the first quarter.
