Intel to restart production of entry-level 865GV chipset in 4Q

Wednesday, November 9, 2005

Intel is scheduled to restart production its entry-level 865GV chipset in the fourth quarter, as the chip giant has observed huge demand from the channel market.

In addition, the launch of Intel’s high-end 975X chipset will be pushed up from the first quarter of 2006 to the middle of this November, the sources indicated.

The renewed production of Intel’s integrated 865GV chipset will adhere to lead-free requirements as required under the EU’s Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) legislation, which will take effect on July 1, 2006, sources at motherboard makers pointed. The mainstream 915 series is expected to be phased out of the market from the fourth quarter, while Intel attempts to accelerate migration to DDR2-supporting 945 chipsets, the sources suggested.

Intel began supplying its 975X chipsets to motherboard makers earlier this month, in order to counter Advance Micro Devices’ (AMD) recent expansion into the channel market, sources at motherboard makers indicated. According to Gigabyte Technology, its high-end GA-G1975X motherboard that supports Intel’s 975X chipset is slated to launch on November 14.
