Intel plans to introduce its 965-series chipset, codenamed Broadwater, in the second quarter of 2006.
In terms of applications, Intel’s 965 chipset series, which support DDR2 memory, will be divided into two segments – the P965 and G965 lines for the consumer-market oriented Bridge Creek platform and the Q965 and Q963 series for the enterprise-use Averill platform, the sources hinted.
Apart from the P965 series, the G965, Q965, and Q963 series all integrate Intel’s Graphic Media Accelerator (GMA) graphics core, the sources noted. Out of the entire Broadwater product line, only the Q963, which is aimed at the entry-level enterprise segment, does not support DDR2 800 memory, the sources added.
Taiwan motherboard makers anticipate migration to DDR2 as mainstream memory will take off in the second quarter of next year, when Intel’s 965 line hits the market and the exit of DDR-supporting chipsets will stimulate the adoption of the 945 chipset series. Currently, shipments of 945-based motherboards are approaching the level of 915-based boards in certain markets, according to the makers.
