DRAM module makers are rejecting demands from memory makers that orders for NAND flash be bundled with certain amounts of DDR2, sources said.
The bundling deal has been in practice with such big players as Samsung Electronics, Hynix Semiconductor and Micron Technology, which have been eager to clear their excess DDR2 inventories, the sources said.
The three memory makers did not respond to the report at the time of publication.
Modules makers had little choice but accept the deal when NAND flash supply was tight amid strong demand from such first-tier brands as Apple and Sony, which were high in the pecking order, the sources said.
As the Christmas high season is drawing to a close as far as shipments are concerned, module makers are reducing their orders for NAND flash. Their lower demand has enabled them to refuse extra DDR2, which is already piling up as inventory at module makers, the sources said.
However, the sources noted that the refusal to accept a bundle deal may only be temporary, because if demand picks up ahead of Chinese New Year, the module makers will have to accept the deal again.
