Taiwan-based chipset makers Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and VIA Technologies will likely beat their shipment estimates for the fourth quarter of this year, thanks to the loosening of related upstream components supplies, according to company sources.

Buoyed by smoother output of its Pentium 4-based SiS661, SiS may enjoy an on-quarter jump of 50% in shipments in the fourth quarter, doubling its original estimate of 25%, the company noted. In November, SiS saw its chipset shipments climb to three million units, up 87.5% sequentially, the company said.

Chipset shipments from VIA is expected to grow 40% sequentially in the fourth quarter, beating its original goal of 32%, company sources indicated.

Intel’s recent neglect of the entry-level chipset market has encouraged SiS and VIA to ramp up chipset productions for the Pentium 4 platform, sources at the companies hinted. Shipments of Pentium 4 chipsets from the two makers are almost equal to the K8 segment, which used to account for more than 60% of their chipset shipments, respectively, according to the sources.
