Taiwan see 25% growth in LCD shipment

Thursday, December 8, 2005
According to IDC's third quarter personal computer display market report, the overall display market of Taiwan did well in third quarter which was better than the second quarter.

Owing to the consumers' beforehand purchase decision, the shipment of forth quarter would be slow down from the third quarter. However, the brand ranking still remained the same. The top four brands included Chi Mei, Viewsonic, Acer, and BenQ among which Viewsonic grew 5 percent as the rapidest growing brand.

With the influence of back-to-school and PC replacement of government agencies and educational institutes, the PC display shipment of third quarter exceeded 610,000 units with the growth rate of 25.8 percent. IDC also indicated that under the pressure of the price increase of LCD panels in second quarter and the gasoline price rising in third quarter, more manufacturers tended to raise the product price. Therefore, when the market price was still stable and expected price would increase, consumers and dealers started to purchase these products in advance and elevated inventory quantity at the end of third quarter. Therefore, the shipment of fourth quarter would be affected.

The shipments of October and November were lower than the usual. In December, the IT Month might stimulate the sales; however the total shipment of forth quarter was still lower than the third quarter's. In terms of brands, Chi Mei took the first place with 24.45 percent market share and followed by Viewsonic, Acer, and BenQ. The top four brands were accounted for over 70 percent of the whole market.

In terms of product specifications, 19-inch LCD display was the mainstream. Over the sufficient supply of 19-inch panel, the price of 19-inch LCD display might have the room to lower the price and also shrink the price gap between 19-inch and 17-inch. The 19-inch display was accounted for 33.2 percent of total shipment in third quarter. And LCD display shipment was increased from 92.9 percent in the second quarter to 95.1 percent in third quarter which might take over the CRT monitor in the market.
