Dell and HP battle for lead in PC market

Tuesday, December 20, 2005 Dell and Hewlett-Packard (HP) have been battling over the top rank in the global PC market, third-placed Lenovo is quietly building up momentum for a run at the top spot.

Dell maintained its grip on the number one spot of the overall PC market and shipped 9.5 million units in the third quarter of 2005, up 5.3% from 8.97 million in the second quarter, according to a preliminary ranking from iSuppli. However, the growth lagged the industry average, causing its market share to decline slightly to 17.3%, down from 0.7-percentage points on-quarter.

Following Dell, HP came on strong, with its shipments surging to 8.4 million units during the third quarter, up 18.7% from 7.1 million in the previous quarter. HP’s market share grew to 15.5%, putting it only less than two-percentage points behind Dell.

While the two US-based PC giants have been slugging it out, China’s Lenovo has been on the move. Although Lenovo continues to trail HP by shipments of about 2.5 million PCs every quarter, there are signs that the company is gaining momentum.

Lenovo’s PC shipments amounted to 4.1 million units in the third quarter of this year, up 12.7% from 3.6 million in the second quarter. While this growth rate is lower than for some of its close competitors, Lenovo is gaining share in the third quarter, with its portion of overall shipments rising to 7.4%. The China PC vendor continues to reap the benefits of its acquisition of IBM’s PC Division, which has caused its sales to leap dramatically compared to 2004.
