Acer to ship Napa notebook in January

Wednesday, December 21, 2005

Acer is expected to be the first notebook vendor to ship a model based on Intel’s Napa mobile platform, which is slated for release by the first quarter of 2006, according to sources at Taiwan notebook manufacturers. The vendor’s Napa-based notebook may be available in early January, the sources noted.

Calvin Chang, vice president of Acer's Greater China marketing division, claimed that Acer’s upcoming Napa-based notebook series would definitely coincide with Intel’s Napa launch announcement.

Besides Acer, Asustek is scheduled to unveil its Napa notebook line at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vagas, which will be held from January 5-8, 2006. The notebooks include the A6J, A7J, V6J and W5J models, according to the company, adding that volume shipments are slated for the first quarter.

The Chinese-language Commercial Times reported on December 19 that Acer will initially market two Napa models, each priced at more than NT$50,000 (US$1,500). Asustek plans to roll out 4-5 Napa notebooks, with 12-, 14- and 15-inch panel display sizes, worldwide in 2006, the paper quoted company sources as saying.

Recent rumors among Taiwan notebook makers indicated that Intel’s dual-core Napa platform is expected to hit the market on January 9, 2006. Stability and price issues, however, may cause migration to Napa to actually begin from the second half of next year, the makers commented.
