LG puts large screen bet on LCOS

Thursday, December 29, 2005

LCoS display supplier SpatiaLight Inc. said today that its primary customer, LG Electronics Inc., is planning to continue its rollout of large display, LCoS-based televisions.

SpatiaLight is a Novato, Calif.-based supplier of LCoS microdisplays for OEM providers like South Korea's LG. LG first demonstrated 71-inch and 62-inch LCoS-based high definition televisions at last year's Consumer Electronics show in January. Then the company announced in September that it was shipping a 71-inch model to custom installers and high-end retailers this fall in North America.

LG is also currently rolling out its LCoS 71-inch TV in the Australian market, and will subsequently add marketing efforts in the U.S. and introduce the product in South Korea, according SpatiaLight.

LCoS projection television is important to LG because the technology will restore a diminishing projection television market and replace older, more mature projection television technologies, SpatiaLight claimed. LG expects that LCoS televisions will cause a sensation in the marketplace because of their price competitiveness; An LCoS television costs approximately one-tenth the price of a plasma display of equivalent size, according to the LCoS supplier.

LG further plans to augment sales of its premium television products by adding personal video recorders (PVRs) to all the televisions above 37 inches in size. PVRs were already included with LG's plasma displays above 37-inches in size this year.

Of SpatiaLight's first nine months of 2005, LG Electronics accounted for 73 percent of the company's $197,365 in revenue during that period. The remainder of its revenue was derived from the sale of LCoS sets to customers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and the United States, according to the company.
