DRAM makers attempt to raise DRAM contract prices

Tuesday, January 3, 2006 DRAM makers are attempting to raise their contract prices by 3-to-5 percent in the first half of January, according to a report from the DRAMeXchange.com.

“Encouraged by the stronger-than-expected demand in December and January, most DRAM makers have announced the attempt of raising contract prices by 3-to-5 percent for both DDR and DDR2 chips,” according to the DRAM clearing house.

“Since DRAM makers have reduced their DDR2 production output since November, a shortage of DDR2, as well as tight supply of DDR are reported,” according to the firm.

Product demand, coupled with the ease of chip-set shortages from Intel Corp., is fueling the proposed contract price hikes in the marketplace, according to the firm. DRAMeXchange expects demand will continue up through Chinese New Year.

During the holidays, a 256-Mbit DDR part running at 400-MHz remained flat at $2.11 and a 512-Mbit DDR chip operating at 400-MHz was up slightly from $4.13 to $4.14.
