Broadcom Corporation announced at the CES the first high definition decoder chip that is fully compliant with competing media formats Blu-ray and HD DVD.
The firm said that the compliance features in the decoder chip will enable a new generation of consumer electronics devices that can decode compressed HD video stored on Blu-ray or HD DVD formatted discs to be recorded and played back on blue laser-based optical disc media and drives.
"The portion that Broadcom is providing is the back end," said Broadcom. "Features like video, graphics, navigation, display. You can use Broadcom solutions to build a player that will play both formats."
The Broadcom BCM7411D HD A/V decoder chip supports H.264 (MPEG-4 Part 10/Advanced Video Coding) and VC-1.
