Motherboard shipments from first-tier makers – Asustek Computer, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), Gigabyte Technology, and Micro-Star International (MSI) – totaled 104.86 million units in 2005, up 18% from 88.51 million units the previous year, according to the companies.
Motherboard shipments from Asustek, ECS, Gigabyte and MSI reached 10.11 million units in December of last year, up 22% from 8.30 million units in December 2004. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the four companies shipped 32.25 million motherboards, rising 23% from 26.22 million units during the same period in 2004.
Asustek posted consolidated revenues of NT$34.28 billion (US$1.1 billion) in December, rising 38% from last year. Sales of its motherboard, notebook and desktop PC product lines presently account for almost 70% of total revenues.
ECS enjoyed on-year growth of 58% in consolidated revenues last month with NT$4.3 billion (US$134 million). In 2005, its motherboard sales contributed to two-third of total revenues, whereas one-third came from its notebook sales, according to the company. This year, ECS is looking to adjust the ratio to 30% for motherboards, 20% for notebooks and about 50% for its newly-added desktop PC segment, said the company in a November article.
Gigabyte generated revenues of NT$4.39 billion (US$137 million) in December, up 21.35% on-year. With a total investment of US$50 million in its China operations, the company plans to expand its product mix to include systems and mobile phones this year, the company stated.
MSI recorded NT$6.30 billion (US$169 million) in revenues last month, up 6.14% on-year. The own-brand and manufacturing segments each currently contribute to half of its revenues. In addition to motherboards and graphics cards, MSI expects shipments of its consumer electronics products to increase significantly in 2006, the company said.
