PSC to buy Macronix 12-inch fab for NAND flash production

Friday, January 13, 2006

With Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) seeing significant NAND flash foundry demand, as well as ramping its own DDR2 output, the memory maker is looking to acquire a 12-inch fab from Macronix International Company (MXIC), according to industry sources.

Recent rumors have suggested that PSC will pay more than NT$1 billion to purchase the 12-inch fab (Fab 3) from Macronix, with the purchase expected to be completed around Chinese New Year, according to sources.

The report ndicated the reason was that PSC plans to volume ship its 4Gbit AG-AND flash for Renesas this quarter, as its yields have hit 80% recently. However, with DDR2 demand picking up as well, PSC is under pressure to find available capacity to meet ramping AG-AND flash demand, the paper noted

Although both companies denied the rumors, industry observers hold a positive outlook about a potential partnership. Market sources stated that clean room deployment at Macronix’s 12-inch fab has already been completed, so PSC would save considerable costs if it only had to purchase equipment.

For Macronix, the potential partnership would also be beneficial, as it will obtain needed funds from PSC, while its fab maintenance costs would also decline.
