Singapore-based FTD Technology Pte Ltd., a distributor of EDA tools that has diversified into design services and intellectual property cores, has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in Bangalore to focus on the research, design and development of application-specific DRAMs for consumer electronics applications.
The firm, Edison Semiconductor Pvt. Ltd., is located here and is being set up in partnership with DRAM maker Elpida Memory Inc., (Tokyo, Japan).
Work at Edison Semiconductor is set to be based on Elpida’s DRAM technology and attempt to introduce it into digital consumer electronics, mobile phones, servers and personal computers.
With Edison Semiconductor FTD is using its previously developed “insourcing” model where it has set up development companies to work exclusively on behalf of global companies. FTD has used the model to work for Synopsys, Toshiba and Creative Technology. The captive organizations set up by FTD for Creative Technology and Toshiba, also based in Bangalore, were later acquired by Toshiba.
