Communications company Motorola Inc. posted fourth-quarter 2005 earnings of $1.2 billion, or 47 cents per share on sales of $10.43 billion, compared to $647 million, or 28 cents per share on sales of $8.84 billion in the year-ago quarter.
Motorola (Schaumburg, Ill.) joined Sony Ericsson in reporting strong year-end sales in the mobile wireless market.
The company recorded fourth-quarter sales of $6.5 billion in its Mobile Devices business, up 30 percent year-over-year. Handset sales reached 44.7 million, up 40 percent year-over-year.
For 2005, Motorola posted sales of $36.84 billion, up 18 percent from $31.32 billion in 2004. Earnings were $4.6 billion or $1.82 per share, compared to $1.53 billion or 90 cents per share for 2004.
For the first quarter of 2006, Motorola projects earnings of 27 to 29 cents per share, with sales of $9.3 to $9.5 billion.
