Micron's closure of Scotland module manufacturing not to affect Crucial

Thursday, February 9, 2006 Memory chip maker Micron Technology Inc. plans to cut more than 130 jobs at Micron Europe Ltd., its memory module assembly and testing facility in East Kilbride, Scotland, according to a Glasgow Evening Times report.

Executives and human resources managers from Micron Technology (Boise, Idaho) flew in for an announcement given to staff at a meeting Tuesday (Feb. 7) afternoon, the report said.

“This proposal will only affect the manufacturing side of the business,” the report quoted a unnamed company spokesman as saying. Crucial Technology Europe, a division of Micron that sells memory upgrades for personal computers, is also housed in the facility and it is understood that sales and distribution of memories will continue there.

The report attributed the closure of the manufacturing side of Micron’s Scottish business to costs compared with other locations around the world.
