IBM today said it plans to use its Cell processor in a new nine-core IBM Cell blade server for business applications.
The company said its new blade server would be part of a new family of blade servers called BladeCenter H and enable computing systems to transmit data 10 times faster than previously possible across corporate networks.
IBM said it expects the servers to be used by businesses that run high-performance analytics software and data warehousing applications in industries such as finance, retail, healthcare, life sciences and telecommunications.
The Cell-based server marks the first time the Cell processor has been used in a product from IBM. Sony has previously used the processor for its Playstation game console. The processor came from a joint development effort among IBM, Sony and Toshiba.
IBM said its implementation the Cell processor will be used to tackle tasks that involve compute-intensive workloads and broadband multimedia applications.
IBM also announced additional blade servers that use alternate processors, also part of the BladeCenter H program, including a dual-core processor from Intel.
And the company, together with Intel, announced the formation of Blade.org today, an organization focused on facilitating the use of blade technology by customers, partners and solution providers. IBM originally announced in July plans to form the organization with Intel and other industry leaders.
The IBM Cell-based blade will be available in Q3.
