Intel Corp. is preparing a server CPU component based on four processor cores and expects to ship the product early in 2007, according to a Reuters report.
The company demonstrated a computer running on two of the components, "Clovertown” but declined to say whether Clovertown would include four processor cores integrated monolithically, or if would use two dual-core chips in a single package, the report said.
Intel is expected to ship Clovertown early 2007, and to sell 60 million of its dual-core chips in 2006, or roughly a quarter of its total processor sales.
Clovertown is intended for server computers with sockets for two processor components so such computers could have up to eight processor cores for processing data.
“Clearly the momentum around multi-core is building,” the report said.
