Shares in NAND flash manufacturers fell amid rumors that Sony would use hard discs in its MP3 players instead of flash chips due to collapse in reaching NAND pricing agreement with Samsung.
Hynix shares fell 12 percent, Toshiba’s fell 5.7 percent and Samsung’s shares dipped nearly 3 percent. However Hynix’s shares could also have been affected by the news that, in March, Japan will put into effect its proposed 27 percent import levy on Hynix chips.
Investors fear that the NAND flash manufacturers have been adding capacity in the expectation that Sony will use NAND flash. If Sony now decides to go with hard disc, then it is feared there will be an over-supply of NAND.
