AMD introduced Opteron dual-core chip


Monday, March 6, 2006 Advanced Micro Devices Inc. has introduced three variants of its dual-core Opteron processor to the market.

The three variants are: the model 885, designed for eight-way, 16-core enterprise servers; the model 285, intended for two-way, four-core workstations and servers and the model 185, for one-way, two-core servers and workstations.

The Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor Model 885 is priced at $2,149 in 1,000-unit quantities and the Model 285 is priced at $1,051 in 1,000-unit quantities. The Dual-Core AMD Opteron processor Model 185, is scheduled to be available within 30 days.

In its press release AMD did not say if or how the three variants of the Opteron dual-core differed from each other physically, or what clock frequency the chips were capable of operating at.
