Toshiba to build new fab for flash?

Monday, March 6, 2006

Toshiba and its partner SanDisk will jointly spend about $4.3 billion to build a new flash memory plant in Japan, business daily Nihon Keizai said.

Toshiba said that it will continue investing in NAND capacity but said that nothing has been decided on a new plant.

The newspaper said that construction of the new plant, which will be located in Toshiba's manufacturing complex in Yokkaichi in western Japan, will begin by the end of this year with actual production starting as early as in 2007.

The new plant will triple Toshiba's NAND output capacity to the equivalent of 250,000 300mm wafers a month by the fiscal year that starts in April 2008, the newspaper said.

"There is a vacant space where a new plant can be built (in the Yokkaichi complex). But no concrete talks have emerged on the plant," a Toshiba representative said.
