Intel next-generation "Woodcrest" server processor, scheduled to be released in the third quarter, runs at a low-voltage that consumes only 40 watts, said an Intel executive during IDT in San Francisco this week.
The processor will run at 2.33Ghz and 64-bit. The current regular Xeons consume anywhere from 110 watts for single-core models to 165 watts for higher-end dual-core parts.
Excessive power consumption is a major problem in the computing industry. Improving performance per watt gives Intel a new sales push.
