Gateway says to work harder in corporate market

Wednesday, March 8, 2006

Gateway Inc. is well-positioned in the faster-growing markets for notebooks and flat-panel monitors, but still has work to do in its direct sales of PCs and to the professional market, the company's interim CEO said.

"It will take some time. Direct has had its challenges," Rick Snyder, told investors at an investor conference, which was broadcast over the Internet. He added that Gateway, in the professional business, needs "a clearer focus there."

Snyder took the helm as interim chief executive nearly a month ago, when former chief executive Wayne Inouye resigned. His resignation came after more than a 50 percent decline in the company's shares since he took over less than two years ago.

Inouye had significantly boosted Gateway's presence in retail outlets such as Best Buy Co., but the company has struggled to make profitable headway in selling PCs and servers to large, corporate customers.

Snyder, who said the board might consider him as a permanent CEO, also said that he sees gaining market share a distinct possibility.

When the company reported quarterly results in February, revenue was less than expected, yet Gateway's retail revenue did jump 31 percent from a year earlier. Revenue in its professional segment declined 9 percent.
