Following rival Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC)’s aggressive deployment of foundry services for NAND flash production, Nanya Technology indicated that it is also considering to offer foundry services for NAND flash production, according to company president Jih Lien during the March 15 ground breaking ceremony at its 12-inch fab.

Lien indicated that the company has started coordinating with industry players to pave the way for its transition to the NAND flash sector.

Lien did not disclose any set roadmap but stated it would better if Nanya first extended its presence for NAND production through providing foundry services.

Although DRAM makers should not encounter too many problems transitioning capacity from DRAM to NAND flash – as no extra equipment is required – Lien stressed that a critical concern for any memory maker is IP when taking a step beyond its core business.

Lien explained that most NAND IP has already been developed by leading industry players; so establishing a dedicated R&D team for NAND development is a must for Nanya.
