Infineon Technologies rise to the No. 2 position in global DRAM sales for the first time during the first quarter, according to preliminary estimates from iSuppli Corp.
Infineon recorded first quarter DRAM sales of $1.16 billion, up 49 percent from $778 million in the fourth quarter of 2005. Infineon captured 17.5 percent of total DRAM market share, up from 12.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2005.
Infineon's success came at the expense of rivals Micron Technology Inc. of the United States and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. of South Korea.
Infineon's ranking rose to number two, two places higher than the fourth-place position it held in the fourth quarter, surpassing Micron Technology Inc. of the United States, which slipped from the third to fourth position, and Hynix Semiconductor Inc. of South Korea, which slipped from the second position to the third position.
Samsung remained atop the DRAM heap in the first quarter, with 26.6 percent market share, according to iSuppli.
