Dell Inc. has joined an AMD group focused on unchecked datacenter power consumption.
Designed to increase awareness of the pressing power issues, The Green Grid was founded last month with the mission of bringing a variety of industry perspectives together to define solutions to power and cooling costs in the world's fast growing datacenters.
AMD CEO Hector Ruiz made the announcement today at the 2006 World Congress on Information Technology in Texas during a keynote presentation. The move reignites industry speculation that Dell, a longtime supporter of Intel technology in its servers, might be close to using AMD technology.
Ruiz welcomed the PC leader to The Green Grid, placing it in the company of Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Sun Microsystems, all of which use AMD Opteron chips. APC and VMware have all signed on as members of the organization.
Michael Dell is slated to speak at the conference keynote tomorrow and is expected to say more on the company’s involvement in the group.
