In exchange for accepting a reported notebook tax from Dell that requires Quanta Computer to return 1.5% of the revenues it receives from the US vendor, Quanta will ship a record 10 million notebooks to Dell in 2007, and a total of 30 million units for the year.
Dell’s global notebook shipments are expected to reach 14 million units in 2006 and 18-19 million in 2007, according to the sources.
With Quanta’s rival Compal Electronics refusing to pay the Dell tax, the shipment gap between the largest and the second-largest notebook makers will likely increase, further highlighting Quanta’s dominance in the Taiwan notebook industry, the sources pointed out.
Wistron should continue following Compal as the number three maker, whereas Inventec and Asustek Computer will fill out the top-five, the sources added.
The sources believe that Quanta’s shipments to Dell will contribute up to 55% to the vendor’s worldwide notebook shipments in 2007, with the orders including all of Dell’s consumer notebook products and part of its business models.
However, Compal will still have a majority of Dell’s business notebook orders and those orders for newly-developed notebooks, such as 12.1-inch widescreen models, for 2007, according to the sources. Compal should still account for 30-35% of Dell’s total contract orders next year, indicated the sources.
Wistron will manufacture two high-end consumer notebooks for Dell in 2007, with the shipments accounting for 10-15% of Dell’s total, the sources mentioned. Asustek, which reportedly beat Samsung Electronics to become Dell’s fourth contract maker for notebooks, has secured only one order for a 17-inch model from the US vendor for 2007, with the model mainly being for testing new markets, the sources added.
