IPTV is up at the horizon

Wednesday, May 24, 2006

Internet protocol television (IPTV) got a massive boost today when Alcatel and Microsoft announced a global deal with HP for servers that will support the next generation of television.

The companies said the agreement will deliver advanced servers to carriers offering “triple play” to customers. Triple play is the provision of voice, video and data that will essentially allow on-demand TV in the home.

The arrangement between the companies will speed time to market for IPTV, they claimed, and improve performance for telecoms providers.

"Alcatel and Microsoft are changing market perceptions about IPTV services, and HP is pleased to be extending its long-term relationships with both companies," said Peggy Dau, a director at HP.

"Today's announcement demonstrates the growing momentum of the IPTV industry," said Christine Heckart, general manager of marketing for the Microsoft TV Division. "Service providers benefit from increased system performance and enhanced architecture scalability that result when industry-leading companies such as HP join the IPTV ecosystem."

In another announcement, Alcatel and Microsoft said they will also use IBM’s servers for IPTV deployment. The servers will support Microsoft’s TV IPTV Edition software platform within Alcatel's Triple Play Service Delivery Architecture (TPSDA).

“Our joint collaboration with Alcatel and IBM is a significant validation of the growing IPTV industry," said Heckart. “By working with these industry-leading companies we can continue to strengthen the Microsoft IPTV Edition platform while enabling service providers to cost-effectively deliver exciting new TV experiences for consumers.”
