Powerchip cut prices on memory

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Powerchip Semiconductor Corporation (PSC) has lowered prices for DDR and DDR2 memory although it has not been under any pressure to do so, according to industry sources.

According to PSC's latest quotes, the price for 256Mbit effectively test (eTT) DDR chips has dropped about 8%to US$2.25 from US$2.45, the sources indicated.

For non-branded 512Mbit DDR2 chips, the price has been lowered about 6% to US$4.5 from the previous US$4.8, while branded 512Mbit DDR chips has declined more than 11% to US$4 from US$4.5, the sources added.

PSC, which failed to lower prices in its last two quotes, is not under pressure to cut prices, as its inventory levels are low, the sources remarked. The company has chosen to lower its quotes as a goodwill gesture towards its clients, the sources speculated.
