Inventec may replace Compal Electronics to become the largest contract notebook maker for Toshiba in 2006, sources indicated. Inventec's monthly shipments to the Japanese vendor may climb to 300,000 units this year, up significantly from 100,000 units in 2005, the sources said.
In 2006, Toshiba's worldwide notebook shipments are expected to reach 9-10 million units, with half of them being manufactured by Inventec, according to the sources. Inventec's notebook shipments are estimated to record 6-7 million units this year, indicated the sources.
Toshiba is looking to outsource 70-80% of its notebook production to Taiwan manufacturers in 2006, compared to 60% last year, the sources estimate. In 2005, Compal was the largest supplier among Toshiba's contract manufacturers and the maker shipped 2.5-3 million notebooks to Toshiba. Inventec followed with shipments of one million units, the sources noted.
