Qimonda offers DDR2 memory modules for Intel server platforms

Thursday, June 1, 2006 Qimonda AG is manufacturing its Double Data Rate 2 (DDR2) fully buffered Dual-In-line memory modules (FB-DIMMs) in high volume for Intel’s Bensley server platforms in 533MHz and 667 MHz for densities ranging from 512 MBytes to 4GBytes. The FB-DIMM is based on an Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) chip, DDR2 DRAM chips and a proprietary heat sink.

“FB-DIMM technology is a new technology essential to increasing the speed and memory capacity in the new Bensley platform,” said Jim Pappas, director of initiatives marketing for Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group. FB-DIMMs change the parallel architecture of today’s Registered DIMMs into a serial point-to-point connection. This eliminates the throughput bottleneck of increased densities and speed grades of next-generation server memory.

The AMB, a highly complex logic chip offers a data rate of 4.8 Gbps as a high-speed link interfacing directly with the DDR2 DRAMs which have speed grades of up to 800 Mbps. In addition to using it for its own modules, Qimonda will also deliver the AMB chip to other FB-DIMM manufacturers, boosting market penetration of the next generation server memory.
