Samsung Electronics displayed what the company claims is the industry's first 1.98-inch LCD panel to achieve VGA resolution at the Society of Information display conference here this week.
Mobile phones equipped with a VGA display will be able to show Windows screens and documents with the same quality delivered by most desktop or notebook PCs. The cellphone display promises to deliver better mobile TV images, with delineation of visual details as small as 63 microns. A typical 40-inch, high-definition LCD TV has 40 pixels per square inch; the new 1.98-inch LCD panel has 10 times as many, or 400 ppi.
Samsung's proprietary, amorphous silicon gates are built into the LCD panel to achieve maximum efficiency in module processing. Samsung said it has also achieved 16 million colors. The transmissive LCD yields images that exhibit 250 nits of brightness and a contrast ratio of 300 to 1.
