Qimonda AG, the world’s second largest DRAM supplier, today announced that it has supplied the industry’s first DDR3 SO-DIMM samples (Double Data Rate 3 Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module) to ATI, the fastest growing independent chipset company and a world leader in the design and manufacture of innovative 3D graphics solutions.
DDR3 will become the next standard of high-speed, low-power memory components and modules used in server systems, desktops and notebook computers. The first notebook PCs equipped with Qimonda DDR3 SO-DIMM memory technology are expected to be available in 2007.
The new Qimonda DDR3 512MB SODIMM modules are the world’s fastest SO-DIMM modules processing data at the exceptional transfer rate of 800Mbps (megabits per second) and 1067Mbps equivalent to about 40 songs in MP3 quality or 80 high resolution digital images per second.
“Long battery life, light-weight designs, and strong performance are the benchmarks of leading mobile platforms, and with Qimonda’s help in supplying ATI with the industry’s first DDR3 SO-DIMM modules, we’re working to take performance and power efficiency even farther,” said Reuven Soraya, director of platform marketing, ATI. “By working closely with Qimonda, we continue to push the technological edge that will dramatically impact the next generation of notebook PCs.”
“Qimonda’s DDR3 memory module is the first SO-DIMM module operating on just 1.5 volts targeting a work day equivalent of battery time, “ said Thomas Seifert, member of the management board of Qimonda. “ The supply voltage reduction and Qimonda’s Power Saving technology leadership are important prerequisites to meet future notebook requirements for low power consumption and heat generation due to the increase in bandwidth.”
DRAMeXchange predicts that DDR3 production ratio will climb to 30% of the overall DRAM production in 2008 and expects DDR3 DRAM products to replace their predecessor DDR2 as the main volume product in 2009.
The Qimonda DDR3 SO-DIMM modules are based on DDR3 512Mbit components which are co-developed by Nanya Technology Cooperation and Qimonda and support new functionality to permit its unprecedented processing speeds, such as Dynamic ODT (On Die Termination), which enhances signal integrity on the data bus required to run 2 DIMMs per channel at very high data rates. The Calibrated Driver Impedance with 34 Ohm optimizes the impedance of DDR3 SDRAM output drivers. In combination with a reduced interface parasitics, read and write operations on the data bus make very high transfer rates possible.
