First-tier Taiwan-based notebook makers are expected to see their notebook shipments in 2006 fall short of their targets by 5-10% due to slower-than-expected shipments in the first half of this year, according to sources at the makers.
Quanta shipped 8.7 million notebooks in the first six months of this year, lower than its target of 9.6 million units, whereas Compal Electronics' first-half notebook shipments totaled 5.44 million units, slightly lower than its projection of six million, according to sources at the two companies.
Quanta president Michael Wang has said that about 10% the company's projected notebook shipments for this year might be affected by uncertainty in the market.
Although shipments are likely maintain momentum in the third quarter, the impact of the delayed launch of the Vista OS on notebook shipments is expected to be felt in September, the sources noted.
