Elpida Memory today announced that it has established a new fully-owned company, dubbed Akita Elpida Memory, in Japan to handle back-end processes of memory production. The company, which was created by acquiring business from Hitachi and its subsidiaries, will start operations in October. Akita Elpida will undertake development of MCP (multi-chip package), PoP (package-on-package) and other types of advanced packages, Elpida said.
Besides Elpida, the deal included Hitachi, Akita Electronics Systems, which is a part of the Hitachi group, and Akita Semiconductor, a subsidiary of Akita Electronics. Five companies, with Akita Elpida also involved, agreed that Akita Elpida would assume control of semiconductor back-end processes that were previously managed by Akita Electronics and Akita Semiconductor, according to Elpida.
Akita Electronics and Akita Semiconductor, the two companies that currently test and pack Elpida's high-end products, will transfer their "know-how" database and employees to the new entity.
